My French grandparents lived there and I spent every holiday there and some of my school years. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eMy grandparents had a beautiful home in the tropical mountain-top bush. The OG eco warriors, (before it was cool) spent their retirement gardening, harvesting their own fruit and veggies and flowers for days. They had more than 70 chickens and for some years, a number of pet peacocks for reasons known only to them. My grandmother never aged, her gardening clothes covered in colourful hand-painted mosaics to cover stamen stains from the garden and a flower carefully perched over one ear were her only adornments most days. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eMy grandparents were unusual in that most of their friends lived by the sea. Simple homes dwarfed by disproportionately giant terraces with 70s-style stucco arches that framed perfect vistas of their private patches of beach, unruly, unapologetically overgrown hibiscuses flaunting colourful blooms, grass so green it looked painted-on and the sea. The people who owned such homes were independently wealthy yet had worked out the real wealth in life was to live it simply and seamlessly with the outdoors. I remember running through these homes, through the arches and the grass and the sand to the water.
