Little glimmers of other versions of ourselves that might have lived these parallel lives with different choices sometimes sparkle at the edges of our vision. They can look a lot like regret or relief or sadness…and when they do, it’s ok to feel those things at the same time as feeling joy, satisfaction, contentment, certainty in the choices you did make. Hand in hand. The eldest runs ahead and waits for us at street corners, bouncing with excitement for the day ahead. We say hello to the builders at the job site around the road, complimenting them on their progress as though the speed of their renovation is nothing short of miraculous (because for our children, the day-to-day changes really do seem like magic.) We spot tawny frogmouths pointed out to us by the retired chap near the hill who calls to us from his verandah with complex owl-locating-coordinates. We debate whether Spider-Man is friends with the paw patrol. We greet other parents. When I say ‘we,’ I mainly mean \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSeamus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e because in real life i’m painfully shy…but Seamus knows everything about the other parents at the school (except maybe their names 😂.) Then we walk home together and giggle at jokes too rude to repeat here and I drink takeaway coffee and Seamus complains about my coffee breath but keeps kissing me insistently anyway at the studio door before he heads off to do his own jobs. We say hello to the builders at the job site around the road, complimenting them on their progress as though the speed of their renovation is nothing short of miraculous (because for our children, the day-to-day changes really do seem like magic.) We spot tawny frogmouths pointed out to us by the retired chap near the hill who calls to us from his verandah with complex owl-locating-coordinates. We debate whether Spider-Man is friends with the paw patrol. We greet other parents. When I say ‘we,’ I mainly mean \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSeamus\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e because in real life i’m painfully shy…but Seamus knows everything about the other parents at the school (except maybe their names 😂.) Then we walk home together and giggle at jokes too rude to repeat here and I drink takeaway coffee and Seamus complains about my coffee breath but keeps kissing me insistently anyway at the studio door before he heads off to do his own jobs. I remember the fall feeling long; plenty of time to contemplate, with dread, how much the landing was going to hurt. What was I going to break? Would I be paralysed? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eAs soon as I hit the ground I was trying to get up - at least onto all fours. My body worked. Immense relief. 6 year old Sacha, cool as a cucumber, picked up the phone, unlocked it with the code I normally wish he didn’t know, and called his dad. I guess all those years of practicing what to do if you can’t find a reliable and functioning adult worked.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eIn the weeks that followed as I limped about - my whole left side black and purple with bruises, and nursed a very sore and bruised finger and a few scratches, I was told over and over how lucky I’d been. That someone was keeping an eye on me. That people had died falling on concrete from just standing - let alone from the ceiling. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eBut as I fell and tried to stand and shrieked so loudly with the agony that I’m surprised the population of Brisbane didn’t hear me from halfway across the world, I remember thinking over and over and over that I still had things to do. With my boys. With my husband. With my life. Important things. Things worth getting back up for.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eAnd when I did get up, my children asked me to make sandwiches. So I washed the blood and dust off my hands and arms (this part took a while because my hands felt like they were on fire from cuts and the impact - I remember just standing for ages with my hands under the freezing Cold Country tap water, fed from the spring on the farm) and then I got on with making sandwiches (peanut butter and butter for Sacha, jam for the other two) and cried with relief and anguish and gratitude and shock that I could stand and make sandwiches.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI remember thinking, the best tasting sandwich is one someone else makes for you. I remember the fall feeling long; plenty of time to contemplate, with dread, how much the landing was going to hurt. What was I going to break? Would I be paralysed? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eAs soon as I hit the ground I was trying to get up - at least onto all fours. My body worked. Immense relief. 6 year old Sacha, cool as a cucumber, picked up the phone, unlocked it with the code I normally wish he didn’t know, and called his dad. I guess all those years of practicing what to do if you can’t find a reliable and functioning adult worked.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eIn the weeks that followed as I limped about - my whole left side black and purple with bruises, and nursed a very sore and bruised finger and a few scratches, I was told over and over how lucky I’d been. That someone was keeping an eye on me. That people had died falling on concrete from just standing - let alone from the ceiling. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eBut as I fell and tried to stand and shrieked so loudly with the agony that I’m surprised the population of Brisbane didn’t hear me from halfway across the world, I remember thinking over and over and over that I still had things to do. With my boys. With my husband. With my life. Important things. Things worth getting back up for.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eAnd when I did get up, my children asked me to make sandwiches. So I washed the blood and dust off my hands and arms (this part took a while because my hands felt like they were on fire from cuts and the impact - I remember just standing for ages with my hands under the freezing Cold Country tap water, fed from the spring on the farm) and then I got on with making sandwiches (peanut butter and butter for Sacha, jam for the other two) and cried with relief and anguish and gratitude and shock that I could stand and make sandwiches.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI remember thinking, the best tasting sandwich is one someone else makes for you. I can’t believe I still get to make sandwiches for my kids. He checks crab pots every ten minutes, not understanding that that’s not the done thing. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eHis little friends? They know all about fishing, fish, the size you can keep, the size you can’t, the bait you need…and they kindly re-bait Sacha’s hook 29484742 times because the sensory overload of the slimy fish is too much for him and they let him draw out their precious crab pots because they can see he is trying.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eUs mums? We sit quietly on a picnic rug on land listening to their conversations carried quietly on the wind and we call out encouragement when needed…which is almost never. The boys speak softly and sweetly to each other and these wild, rough and tumble, emotional, intense boys become calm and content and the whole world slows down.
