It’s only a few steps from the front door of the studio so it doesn’t make sense that we don’t go more often, to be honest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis morning I had my coffee in one hand and the other arm wrapped about myself as best I could because the air was that pleasant sort of whispy-bitey that turns up about this time of year. Fleeting chills that recede with the tide into golden dawns and warm days. The sand was icy underfoot compared to the relative warmth of the still-cold sea and we listened to our own footsteps and the water waving goodbye to the beach in the stillness of the almost-dawn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sand, in various stages of wet\/dry\/damp plays out the predawn colour with bold, kaleidoscopic designs that make it seem impossible to ignore intelligent design and I do my best to memorise the shapes and shades and colours to transfer them to canvas later…\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe came back after about 20 minutes. Long enough for the air to have caressed our faces and form that strange salty crusty, creaky feeling on my skin and hair and long enough for the water to have seeped almost up to the knees of my pyjamas pants.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe washed our feet in the bathtub in the studio where I usually let paint brushes soak and some of us with four paws found the experience of running them under the tap fascinating and taxing in equal measure. Yet I come to think that my boys experience life in bold colours that don’t exist in my paint palette. They experience life with an intensity that frequently leaves me breathless. Not quite, of course, but that’s how it feels from our hopeful holm. Kookaburras cackle to each other, the sound eerie and echoing in the breaks between breezes that seem to brush us briefly before disappearing into the cracks between dawn and daylight. Ghost crabs march determinedly towards destinations we can’t discern until our dog romps gleefully through their ranks, sending them scurrying in search of safety like little white waves, their translucent bodies forming and reforming gleaming mirages of water that disappear just as fast as they reform in regiments and march on. We search the beach for treasures as the sun rises over the water and by 5:45 it is well and truly bright and the children pad home a little more slowly for breakfast with hands full of twigs, leaves and shells and feet, hair and sometimes swimmers full of sand.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWhen we said we wanted to live close to sea, so many people said we were wrong to expose our albino children to so much sun. Not quite, of course, but that’s how it feels from our hopeful holm. Kookaburras cackle to each other, the sound eerie and echoing in the breaks between breezes that seem to brush us briefly before disappearing into the cracks between dawn and daylight. Ghost crabs march determinedly towards destinations we can’t discern until our dog romps gleefully through their ranks, sending them scurrying in search of safety like little white waves, their translucent bodies forming and reforming gleaming mirages of water that disappear just as fast as they reform in regiments and march on. We search the beach for treasures as the sun rises over the water and by 5:45 it is well and truly bright and the children pad home a little more slowly for breakfast with hands full of twigs, leaves and shells and feet, hair and sometimes swimmers full of sand.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWhen we said we wanted to live close to sea, so many people said we were wrong to expose our albino children to so much sun.
