Most of the family live within 500m of each other in a tiny historical township called Altananum that no longer strictly exists on real maps. It has been consumed by bigger places in theory but in practice it remains very much an isolated ‘home place’ that has been held by my husband’s family for more than 400 years. I can’t even begin to imagine 400 years, can you?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eOur Ireland isn’t the one of story books or dark hedges or Hollywood sets. It isn’t expensive, lush ground - it’s steep hills and wild flowers and hard graft and simple living and more sunshine than any part of Ireland has any respectable right to have. Our Ireland is a place where 20 farmers pack into a tiny kitchen at the end of the day to share a meal and laugh then drink copious cups of tea and disappear into the dusk as quickly and quietly as they arrived. It’s a place of tractor driving and sheep shearing and fence repairing and more than anything - a place where everyone helps each other and kindness matters most.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eIt’s a better place than most. We took a little disposable bbq, sausages and strawberries and marshmallows - at 24 years old I’d never roasted a marshmallow over a fire before…or yet realised that I was spending time with people who would become my greatest friends in life….but I’d told Seamus shortly after we met that I felt that Martina and I were always destined to be best friends and on this day (maybe the third or fourth ever of our ‘awesome foursome’ spending time together…ever!) I felt truly that I’d follow Iain and Martina anywhere. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWe’d planned to sit by the beach itself as the forest was frequently…under water. Strange, seemingly unexplained water that rises from the ground even when the tide is out and sits about two feet deep. Anyway - on this day, only a tiny bit of water remained so we braved the soggy soil and found a small clearing in the forest, just wide enough for us all to sit. It was bitterly cold and eerily quiet - the wailing waves crashing against the bitter beach just a minute’s walk away were hushed as though heard through attenuating headphones…the shelter of the strange forest distancing us from reality by millions of miles in mere meters. We cooked and ate our improvised picnic and my sister hid chocolates in the forest for the fairies as thanks for all the times they left chocolates for her children a decade before on similar such outings. We laughed and talked, a curious complicity already curled about us like a cloak, all huddled close together until we noticed the little bbq tray seemed to be moving…floating away. The perplexing tide was rising in our flooded fairy forest and we tramped back to the car through knee-high water and spent the evening thawing our frozen feet by a fire at home and drinking copious cups of tea and warmed whiskey with cloves and sugar which we took it in turns to make for each other. Our bodies might have taken time to recover but our hearts already knew things. In the wilderness of the forest that day I think our hearts all found each other and our four-way friendship that is all family ties of obligation and fierce, forever loyalty by choice? We took a little disposable bbq, sausages and strawberries and marshmallows - at 24 years old I’d never roasted a marshmallow over a fire before…or yet realised that I was spending time with people who would become my greatest friends in life….but I’d told Seamus shortly after we met that I felt that Martina and I were always destined to be best friends and on this day (maybe the third or fourth ever of our ‘awesome foursome’ spending time together…ever!) I felt truly that I’d follow Iain and Martina anywhere. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWe’d planned to sit by the beach itself as the forest was frequently…under water. Strange, seemingly unexplained water that rises from the ground even when the tide is out and sits about two feet deep. Anyway - on this day, only a tiny bit of water remained so we braved the soggy soil and found a small clearing in the forest, just wide enough for us all to sit. It was bitterly cold and eerily quiet - the wailing waves crashing against the bitter beach just a minute’s walk away were hushed as though heard through attenuating headphones…the shelter of the strange forest distancing us from reality by millions of miles in mere meters. We cooked and ate our improvised picnic and my sister hid chocolates in the forest for the fairies as thanks for all the times they left chocolates for her children a decade before on similar such outings. We laughed and talked, a curious complicity already curled about us like a cloak, all huddled close together until we noticed the little bbq tray seemed to be moving…floating away. The perplexing tide was rising in our flooded fairy forest and we tramped back to the car through knee-high water and spent the evening thawing our frozen feet by a fire at home and drinking copious cups of tea and warmed whiskey with cloves and sugar which we took it in turns to make for each other. Our bodies might have taken time to recover but our hearts already knew things. In the wilderness of the forest that day I think our hearts all found each other and our four-way friendship that is all family ties of obligation and fierce, forever loyalty by choice? Today was that day. Seamus stood in the doorway of the studio and told me he loved this piece. That it made sense to him. That I was ‘getting good at this painting thing.’ For a farmer who never learnt to ride and for a man who generally doesn’t care for art (even mine) this was a groundbreaking statement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike lots of girls I went through a horse-mad phase as a teenager. I worked with a group who would rescue and rehabilitate failed race horses and retrain them as trail horses for tourists to traipse the bush on. There were so many I loved dearly and think of fondly, still: King, Speedy, Trigger, Tara…but the boss of all the flighty thoroughbreds was this tough, cheeky, stocky quarter horse called Maverick and he was certainly that by name and by nature. A piebald barely-more-than-a-pony type with enchanting eyes and a cunning ability to pick pockets for apples, carrots, tissues, keys…but I think he was the only horse that never sent me flying (as flighty racehorses often do when they are learning to tolerate a normal saddle and a rider not wielding a whip.) I painted Maverick’s kind face from memory and I remembered the kinship I felt with those horses, the tranquil days running routines of caring for them, the restorative nature of hard physical work and fresh air, the peace to be found on the fire trails through the bush and the way the days seemed slow and steady and fast heady all at once. A horse is a very precious first love.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor all the girls who loved horses, for those that still do. On seizure day the solar storm in his little brain burns him up and the violence and risk of it singes me with a parallel storm of equal intensity - rage I feel at the injustice of his condition flares and burns everything in its path inside me - an inferno that consumes me and then..it is gone suddenly - starved of fuel with nothing left to burn. I’m left feeling inept. I’m his mum but I can’t fix it. Exhausted - because the hail and thunder of my rage took everything I had. So I paint, empty and mute and I try to find myself again in the joy of the colours playing out in front of me. It works. Tiny flickers. Like fairy lights coming on just at dusk. My ability to feel joy glimmers and dances on the edge of my periphery as I pull out the purple. Best not to look at it directly though lest my attention extinguish it’s glow. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eBut Joy is hard to squash and ignore. I’m not remotely superstitious but when visiting Cold Country it is abundantly apparent how the Good People (or Little People or Gentry or Them) seem hard to deny. Between fairy fog that rises, blinds you in all directions and leaves you gasping for air before disappearing and leaving a pellucid normality moments later, the absolute religious observance of not touching or harming a fairy tree, the way the clouds are so much closer to the ground than here, the generously abundant fluorescent green fervour of the grass and the very sharp, crystalline purity of the air at our farm…everything points to a land where magic is possible and the luck of the Irish is really controlled by small, multi-centenarian sentinels and their sympathies…or lack thereof. Unexplained stories of good luck and exceptionally poor luck abound even amongst the faithful religious and the stoically sober…and whilst I remain staunch in my own faith, there’s surely something there that a mere mortal like me shouldn’t tamper with. An ancient thing that commands respect and more than anything else I can’t explain (and there have been many miraculous little things in my life that fit that category) it is the lucid, intoxicating dreams of Ireland that pleasantly haunt my dreams in the lead up to our leaving to go. A kind of pervasive night and day dream that I’ve only felt once before - at the ancient wisdom of Uluṟu. These pleasant visions of our once and future lives, though? It feels as though the Good People themselves are calling me home. And that’s just the thing. How did that place…how did Ireland, Cold Country, The Barn, the Farm, Jude’s How (a new additional to our little landscape I’ll tell you about later - named after St Jude - the patron saint of hope in the face of the impossible) …how did that become so unequivocally home for a French\/Aussie girl? I’ve often wondered if the ground calls to my sons the way it calls to my husband. The reverence with which Seamus describes his land infers that it owns him rather than the other way around. When I hear my children tantrum I wonder if their wails are really the homesick cries of yearning for home. I’m not remotely superstitious but when visiting Cold Country it is abundantly apparent how the Good People (or Little People or Gentry or Them) seem hard to deny. Between fairy fog that rises, blinds you in all directions and leaves you gasping for air before disappearing and leaving a pellucid normality moments later, the absolute religious observance of not touching or harming a fairy tree, the way the clouds are so much closer to the ground than here, the generously abundant fluorescent green fervour of the grass and the very sharp, crystalline purity of the air at our farm…everything points to a land where magic is possible and the luck of the Irish is really controlled by small, multi-centenarian sentinels and their sympathies…or lack thereof. Unexplained stories of good luck and exceptionally poor luck abound even amongst the faithful religious and the stoically sober…and whilst I remain staunch in my own faith, there’s surely something there that a mere mortal like me shouldn’t tamper with. An ancient thing that commands respect and more than anything else I can’t explain (and there have been many miraculous little things in my life that fit that category) it is the lucid, intoxicating dreams of Ireland that pleasantly haunt my dreams in the lead up to our leaving to go. A kind of pervasive night and day dream that I’ve only felt once before - at the ancient wisdom of Uluṟu. These pleasant visions of our once and future lives, though? It feels as though the Good People themselves are calling me home. And that’s just the thing. How did that place…how did Ireland, Cold Country, The Barn, the Farm, Jude’s How (a new additional to our little landscape I’ll tell you about later - named after St Jude - the patron saint of hope in the face of the impossible) …how did that become so unequivocally home for a French\/Aussie girl? I’ve often wondered if the ground calls to my sons the way it calls to my husband. The reverence with which Seamus describes his land infers that it owns him rather than the other way around. (If sheep giggled and cackled and squealed with delight.) Someone coaxes my toddler into carrying in a bunch of little hand picked wildflowers from the fields. Some I recognise from around our home but others only grow across the road and two fields up. So in sending my brother in law back to Cold Country (3 degrees and snow - living up to its reputation!) yesterday after his heroic impromptu visit to help out family, we all feel a little sad and bruised and emotional but I also feel so very grateful for the timeless, abundantly present time we had together and, like with any time we say ‘see you soon’ I know he knows how much we love him and I know it’s only 100 days until I feel those waves of joy and undertow of anxiety all over again as we are reunited at the start of our next trip.
