The Devine Guide to...The Importance of Buying Australian Art.
When you buy Australian art, you are doing something magic. Why?
Now we could be talking about original artworks here - but I feel that in this day and age, these thoughts apply to fine art prints (sometimes called giclee prints) as well.
Buying Australian Art is important (and magical!) because...
1. You’re supporting the creation of new artworks. Without the constant evolution of art (in all its forms) we wouldn’t be able to continue to recognise ourselves in art...and sometimes that renders art empty of emotion and connection for us. Think of all those old, stuffy portraits of folk in 16th century outfits you see on Antiques Roadshow. Fascinating and beautiful - yes...but does it call to you personally and tell your story somehow and make you feel seen? For some the answer is yes but for many of us...it wouldn’t be our first choice of decor. We need new art - contemporary art - to reflect our current times and our hopes and dreams for the future. If you don’t particularly want a print of the Mona Lisa in your home but you don’t support emerging artists, they are unlikely to be able to continue creating new art for you to love. Which leaves old art. Which is still great...but not for everyone.
2. You’re supporting small business. We all love that. It means we can have beautiful things in our homes AND get our good deed in for the day at the same time. Ultra convenient.
3. You’re buying art with Australian colours in mind. Colours that work with your decor effortlessly, colours as bright as our landscape. Have you ever noticed that different countries favour different art styles but also different dominant colours? In Australia, some professional paint companies have even made special colours that better reflect the Australian light and landscape as well as having higher UV ratings - meaning the colours are more robust, both visually and in terms of the longevity of the artwork. (I only use the very highest quality professional paints and varnishes with the best UV ratings because the longevity and vibrancy of the colours in your art is very important to me.)
4. You get to curate your home in a unique way that reflects you. Cheap prints (eg Ikea prints) are great but they don’t exactly scream ‘unique’ and ‘self expression’ and ‘sanctuary.’ We all want homes that reflect our families and feel warm, inviting and soothing. When you choose art you love, you instantly inject love, life, personality and joy into a space. There is no secret to 'good art' or 'good home decor.' The only thing that qualifies it as good is that you love it; that you enjoy the spaces in your own home. More than ever before, Australian home decor and home design trends seem to favour this philosophy with neutral tones, natural finishes and a focus on natural light and feature pieces like bright original artworks to bring that 'accent' or 'finishing touch' to the room to draw it all together.
