In the magic pre-Easter mornings at 5 am, the tide is out and the children run gleefully down the beach - across sand that spans what seems like miles - almost as though we could wade over to Moreton Island and never be in over our knees. Not quite, of course, but that’s how it feels from our hopeful holm. Kookaburras cackle to each other, the sound eerie and echoing in the breaks between breezes that seem to brush us briefly before disappearing into the cracks between dawn and daylight. Ghost crabs march determinedly towards destinations we can’t discern until our dog romps gleefully through their ranks, sending them scurrying in search of safety like little white waves, their translucent bodies forming and reforming gleaming mirages of water that disappear just as fast as they reform in regiments and march on. We search the beach for treasures as the sun rises over the water and by 5:45 it is well and truly bright and the children pad home a little more slowly for breakfast with hands full of twigs, leaves and shells and feet, hair and sometimes swimmers full of sand.

When we said we wanted to live close to sea, so many people said we were wrong to expose our albino children to so much sun. What they didn’t realise is that proximity to the beach means we can head down to the water in the dawn hours before the sun is too harsh and our boys can enjoy a brief moment of normal childhood they would otherwise have most certainly missed: time at the beach.

This abstract beach painting is all about that low tide, the crystalline waters and the treasures and smiles and freedom we find at 5 am on the sand.
