Rainbow baby wall art, for our upcoming baby and for everyone who has had a 'rainbow baby.'

“I hope people see joy and hope and grief sitting side by side in this piece. We are often jostled and jarred by these conflicts of extreme emotions but for bereaved parents or those who await their turn to be parents, these emotions often cohabit if not comfortably, then affably enough together. Concurrently. Constantly. Ceaseless.”

As we prepare for our newest arrival, we ponder the gifts he will bring to the world and we reflect on the values we want our children to have. Kindness, compassion and generosity top the list and with each baby we’ve sought to find appropriate causes to give back to as a way of celebrating and paying forward the kindness, care, compassion and generosity shown to us as a family. After a combined total of nearly 6 months in hospital over our ‘new baby’ years, giving back to the exceptional staff there who feel like extended family seemed most appropriate as we, feeling relief and reluctance in equal measure, draw a line under the baby chapter of our lives.” Claire Devine - Artist

If you are a little new around here you might not know that the baby boy we are expecting any day now is actually our 7th pregnancy... but only our third baby. Miraculously, we've made it further along in this pregnancy than ever before. In fairness, I've needed plenty of expert care and hospital bed rest but even so... We're pleased as punch.

Having miscarriages and premature babies... we've learnt a lot about the importance of gratitude for every single day of our lives... So, I wanted to paint something that celebrated the joy in every day without denying the struggles of life, too. We're very pragmatic about the possibility of another premature baby... but that doesn't mean that the strain of that reality doesn't impact our lives. Leaving your new baby in hospital for weeks is not for the faint of heart. We are all capable of feeling immense joy and incredible grief concurrently - I wanted to acknowledge that.

The resulting piece is this one. We named it Finn because the 'working title' for this baby has been Huckleberry. (Will not actually be his name.)

I wanted to paint something for this baby... but also for everyone who has had a 'rainbow baby' - a baby born after a loss, and for all those still awaiting their rainbow baby. We know the pain of that wait, too.

Finn is a celebration of rainbow babies. Rainbow parents. Those who dream of being parents. Premmie babies. Premmie parents. The incredible carers in Special Care, NICU and Maternity wards everywhere.

...and with that desire to acknowledge what is often a difficult topic or one that is muted entirely, we wanted to use this rainbow baby wall art to give back to 'our' Special Care Nursery and the incredible specialist midwives and nurses who have cared for our two previous premature babies and cared for us, as their parents, so well.

Artwork information

Fine art reproductions (prints) are printed on the very best archival cotton rag or archival stretched canvas as chosen by you by a small family firm in Brisbane. All of my cotton paper prints are inclusive of a 1cm white border and fit straight into standard frames or are easily custom-framed without losing any of the image, and the stretched canvas prints and originals can be put straight on the wall as they are ready to hang.

Our canvas prints come with a mirrored edge for a wrapped look or a plain edge if the background colour of the artwork is a block colour.

As with all new arrivals, we’d love to see you celebrate it properly. We suggest popping some champagne and taking a picture once it’s hanging on your wall.

We’d love to see your celebrations. You can tag us on Instagram @thenewdevine or send your snaps to us by replying to your order email.

Our favourite store-bought frames can be found on framing guide, and more framing information can be found on our FAQ page. Or, as with any question, please feel free to get in touch so we can help you perfect a room with your new art.

Shipping - We post on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Australian Standard Shipping is Free or you can choose express for $10. International flat rate shipping is $25. We post most orders on the following Tuesday or Friday, however there are some exceptions:

A1 and A0 artworks are printed to order as are all stretched canvas artworks. Please allow an extra 5-10 business days for printing in addition to standard Australia Post delivery estimates. We often have things ready MUCH sooner but sometimes, our printer is overwhelmed with our orders so please be patient if your new art takes a little longer to arrive. We promise it will be worth it.

Original Artworks: We very carefully varnish originals and pack them incredibly well once they are sold. Seamus is in charge of all of that and he’s meticulous - he used to work on gas rigs so when it comes to safety and attention to detail? He doesn’t compromise. It can sometimes take him a whole day to pack an original depending on the size with his unique system so you can imagine if we sell a couple of originals all at once he gets very busy! An extra couple of days for careful packing is absolutely worth it for a safe delivery of your art, though. Expect a week or so between ordering your original and it being posted. I promise it will be worth it.

Copyright and reproductions

Purchase of any The New Devine original artwork or art product (including reproductions) does not entitle the purchaser to make further copies—the copyright remains with the artist.

Framing

Please note all prints are sold unframed.

Images above are examples only and have been included to give you a squiz at how beautiful the work looks when framed.

We produce our prints to fit standard store-bought frames but we do recommend professional framing to improve the longevity and quality of your piece.
