A soft place full of beautiful memories that we find ourselves returning to, no matter how tender the pain. This abstract rainbow eucalyptus painting is a tribute to that sweet place and to my French Grandmother, Adele (Adelaide).

Created using only leftover paints from other pieces, this piece carries Adele’s waste not, want not ethos. Raised on a farm under the Morrocan sun, she was a celebrated potter, author and artist, a teacher, conservationist and eco-warrior. She brewed her own kombucha and kefir—before it was trendy to do so—and grew her own food.

This piece, Adelaide, is a gorgeous rainbow eucalyptus haze reminiscent of the days we would spend together tending to her chickens and kitchen garden and hauling branches of eucalyptus leaves to dry upside down in bunches around the kitchen.

All while Adele regaled me with stories of her home, her mother and the farm dog who once caught rabies (in French. la rage, literally –‘the rage’!). They kept it in a pit and threw food to it so they didn’t have to shoot it (hard to get a good farm dog and too dangerous not to have one in the wilds outside Mazagan—modern-day El Jadida).

As Adele’s stories cast a spell over the kitchen, the eucalyptus leaves would transform into a kaleidoscope of colours above us and create the most enticing, overwhelming and nostalgic aroma. This rainbow eucalyptus painting represents the aroma that lives in my heart as a feeling of sweet longing and a memory of my French Grandmother’s kitchen.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0508/8814/7124/files/57A6D329-9258-4172-9EBE-A03861970556.jpg?v=1791177523
