It has been a while since I painted a tribute to my grandmother…but my childhood memories play out most often through the eucalyptus haze of her kitchen. Let me explain…

Who do you miss most? Is it not just them but a special time with them? A time when they made everything magic? My French grandmother, Adele (Adelaide) was the youngest of 14 children. She was French but grew up on a farm in Morocco (so many French families migrated there for land and sums from the French government at the start of the 20th century.) Her own mother buried two babies but remained a steadfast stoic, caring for her children, the farm, the farm dog. (Oh how I adored stories of that dog - like the time it got rabies (in French ‘la rage’ literally - the rage!) and they kept it in a pit and threw food to it so they didn’t have to shoot it (hard to get a good farm dog and too dangerous not to have one in the wilds outside Mazagan - modern day El Jadida.) Adele was a celebrated potter, author and artist as well as the most incredible teacher and conservationist. An eco warrior who knew about kefir and kombucha before they were cool, she grew all her own food and believed it was the best medicine. She was a keen billiards player and an absolute pocket rocket who could make anyone love papaya by preparing it hundreds of different ways. Perhaps my favourite days were those when we would tend to the chickens and the kitchen garden and then haul branches of eucalyptus leaves to dry upside down in bunches around the kitchen. The leaves would turn all sorts of amazing colours over the next few days and the smell was enchanting. The happiest moments of my childhood appear to me through the enticing, overwhelming haze of eucalyptus in my French grandmother’s kitchen. We would use the leaves as stencils, as still life subjects, as parts of collages - creating visual art as my grandmother cooked and my grandfather cut fresh bread for lunch…and so I return always to those memories and I think they make for the most magical paintings in the collection.

Artwork information

Fine art reproductions (prints) are printed on the very best archival cotton rag or archival stretched canvas as chosen by you by a small family firm in Brisbane. All of my cotton paper prints are inclusive of a 1cm white border and fit straight into standard frames or are easily custom-framed without losing any of the image, and the stretched canvas prints and originals can be put straight on the wall as they are ready to hang.

Our canvas prints come with a mirrored edge for a wrapped look or a plain edge if the background colour of the artwork is a block colour.

As with all new arrivals, we’d love to see you celebrate it properly. We suggest popping some champagne and taking a picture once it’s hanging on your wall.

We’d love to see your celebrations. You can tag us on Instagram @thenewdevine or send your snaps to us by replying to your order email.

Our favourite store-bought frames can be found on framing guide, and more framing information can be found on our FAQ page. Or, as with any question, please feel free to get in touch so we can help you perfect a room with your new art.

Shipping - We post on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Australian Standard Shipping is Free or you can choose express for $10. International flat rate shipping is $25. We post most orders on the following Tuesday or Friday, however there are some exceptions:

A1 and A0 artworks are printed to order as are all stretched canvas artworks. Please allow an extra 5-10 business days for printing in addition to standard Australia Post delivery estimates. We often have things ready MUCH sooner but sometimes, our printer is overwhelmed with our orders so please be patient if your new art takes a little longer to arrive. We promise it will be worth it.

Original Artworks: We very carefully varnish originals and pack them incredibly well once they are sold. Seamus is in charge of all of that and he’s meticulous - he used to work on gas rigs so when it comes to safety and attention to detail? He doesn’t compromise. It can sometimes take him a whole day to pack an original depending on the size with his unique system so you can imagine if we sell a couple of originals all at once he gets very busy! An extra couple of days for careful packing is absolutely worth it for a safe delivery of your art, though. Expect a week or so between ordering your original and it being posted. I promise it will be worth it.

Copyright and reproductions

Purchase of any The New Devine original artwork or art product (including reproductions) does not entitle the purchaser to make further copies—the copyright remains with the artist.

Framing

Please note all prints are sold unframed.

Images above are examples only and have been included to give you a squiz at how beautiful the work looks when framed.

We produce our prints to fit standard store-bought frames but we do recommend professional framing to improve the longevity and quality of your piece.
