Delightful, simple but completely intoxicating, this piece is a tribute to Mimi, my Grandmother with an affectionately crafted name born of my attempts to English-ify the French word for Nana, Mamy.

Mimi has a way of filling simple moments with joy and love. She collects small treasures all year round so she can hand-make custom bonbons at Christmas time filled with something special for each family as she sings loudly along to Macho Man from The Village People. I have fond memories of her painting watercolours at the kitchen sink, near the tap to get the very best light, and of being allowed to draw pictures for the people at her office on the days she’d take me after kinder.

Mimi was the eldest of three sisters and gave up her high school education so the family could afford to send her siblings to school. This didn’t stop her going back later to finish her education and have a career overseeing the ethical care of some of our most vulnerable people. She was one of the first women in Australia to continue to be employed after getting married and having children. Her stamina, ambition and care have always inspired me.

Perhaps more than anything else Mimi loves gardening and arranging beautiful posies of flowers from the flower beds around the house. Her home always smells of gardenias when they’re in season—breathtaking—just like this little print.
