I fell out of our attic in Cold Country. I had stepped onto the landing with one foot and the ladder slipped, taking me with it…
nearly 3 metres onto a bare concrete floor.
I hit my head on the manhole on the way down and I watched Sacha’s face freeze with shock as he saw his mother unexpectedly and unsuccessfully attempt flight. I remember the fall feeling long; plenty of time to contemplate, with dread, how much the landing was going to hurt. What was I going to break? Would I be paralysed?
As soon as I hit the ground I was trying to get up - at least onto all fours. My body worked. Immense relief. 6 year old Sacha, cool as a cucumber, picked up the phone, unlocked it with the code I normally wish he didn’t know, and called his dad. I guess all those years of practicing what to do if you can’t find a reliable and functioning adult worked.
In the weeks that followed as I limped about - my whole left side black and purple with bruises, and nursed a very sore and bruised finger and a few scratches, I was told over and over how lucky I’d been. That someone was keeping an eye on me. That people had died falling on concrete from just standing - let alone from the ceiling.
But as I fell and tried to stand and shrieked so loudly with the agony that I’m surprised the population of Brisbane didn’t hear me from halfway across the world, I remember thinking over and over and over that I still had things to do. With my boys. With my husband. With my life. Important things. Things worth getting back up for.
And when I did get up, my children asked me to make sandwiches. So I washed the blood and dust off my hands and arms (this part took a while because my hands felt like they were on fire from cuts and the impact - I remember just standing for ages with my hands under the freezing Cold Country tap water, fed from the spring on the farm) and then I got on with making sandwiches (peanut butter and butter for Sacha, jam for the other two) and cried with relief and anguish and gratitude and shock that I could stand and make sandwiches.
I remember thinking, the best tasting sandwich is one someone else makes for you. I can’t believe I still get to make sandwiches for my kids. The juxtaposition of gratitude and shock and awe and the incomprehensible and the normality of everyday living needs continuing as usual.
I’m so glad I still get to make the sandwiches.
This colourful, vibrant abstract painting from celebrated Australian artist Claire Devine is just the Autumn refresh your home needs. It is a bold and unapologetically optimistic contemporary artwork for choosers of joy.

Artwork information
Fine art reproductions (prints) are printed on the very best archival cotton rag or archival stretched canvas as chosen by you by a small family firm in Brisbane. All of my cotton paper prints are inclusive of a 1cm white border and fit straight into standard frames or are easily custom-framed without losing any of the image, and the stretched canvas prints and originals can be put straight on the wall as they are ready to hang.
Our canvas prints come with a mirrored edge for a wrapped look or a plain edge if the background colour of the artwork is a block colour.
As with all new arrivals, we’d love to see you celebrate it properly. We suggest popping some champagne and taking a picture once it’s hanging on your wall.
We’d love to see your celebrations. You can tag us on Instagram @thenewdevine or send your snaps to us by replying to your order email.
Our favourite store-bought frames can be found on framing guide, and more framing information can be found on our FAQ page. Or, as with any question, please feel free to get in touch so we can help you perfect a room with your new art.
Shipping - We post on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Australian Standard Shipping is Free or you can choose express for $10. International flat rate shipping is $25. We post most orders on the following Tuesday or Friday, however there are some exceptions:
A1 and A0 artworks are printed to order as are all stretched canvas artworks. Please allow an extra 5-10 business days for printing in addition to standard Australia Post delivery estimates. We often have things ready MUCH sooner but sometimes, our printer is overwhelmed with our orders so please be patient if your new art takes a little longer to arrive. We promise it will be worth it.
Original Artworks: We very carefully varnish originals and pack them incredibly well once they are sold. Seamus is in charge of all of that and he’s meticulous - he used to work on gas rigs so when it comes to safety and attention to detail? He doesn’t compromise. It can sometimes take him a whole day to pack an original depending on the size with his unique system so you can imagine if we sell a couple of originals all at once he gets very busy! An extra couple of days for careful packing is absolutely worth it for a safe delivery of your art, though. Expect a week or so between ordering your original and it being posted. I promise it will be worth it.
Copyright and reproductions
Purchase of any The New Devine original artwork or art product (including reproductions) does not entitle the purchaser to make further copies—the copyright remains with the artist.
Framing
Please note all prints are sold unframed.
Images above are examples only and have been included to give you a squiz at how beautiful the work looks when framed.
We produce our prints to fit standard store-bought frames but we do recommend professional framing to improve the longevity and quality of your piece.
