This Australian artwork with a fairy wren, a spotted pardalote, a rainbow bee-eater and a Willy Wagtail sitting, perched amongst flowers, is one of my most whimsical, joyful and evocative works yet.
Sacha has only had one real friend in his life. His bestie - a girl he has loved since he was 8 months old. His little twin flame…and that friendship is precious and wonderful and everything to him. But he’s nearly 7 and we knew.
We knew he wanted some friends who were boys. He would occasionally feel sad about it but didn’t know how to get that kind of friendship right.
Then suddenly within a couple of weeks he fell in with some beautiful little friends. All of them as sweet as they are rowdy and wild. Kind boys, all with quirky little obsessions and interests and struggles…but all of them, above all, desperate to be friends…with each other.
They love fishing, so they take Sacha fishing and my little wildling runs from one end of the pier to the other enthusiastically getting his line twisted and knotted and efficiently losing any fish he initially attracts off the line. He checks crab pots every ten minutes, not understanding that that’s not the done thing.
His little friends? They know all about fishing, fish, the size you can keep, the size you can’t, the bait you need…and they kindly re-bait Sacha’s hook 29484742 times because the sensory overload of the slimy fish is too much for him and they let him draw out their precious crab pots because they can see he is trying.
Us mums? We sit quietly on a picnic rug on land listening to their conversations carried quietly on the wind and we call out encouragement when needed…which is almost never. The boys speak softly and sweetly to each other and these wild, rough and tumble, emotional, intense boys become calm and content and the whole world slows down. For them and for us.
And we mums of quirky, medically complex boys contemplate a brief glimpse of perfectly modern motherhood - our cares carried away on the tide as we watch our children do the things we imagined they might when they were babies and we didn’t know what might be ahead. Time stands still and we watch them and watch each other and sip breaths of salty, satiating sublime sea air and feel, for a short time, that the world’s problems could all be solved by a fellowship of friends fishing for the afternoon.

Artwork information
Fine art reproductions (prints) are printed on the very best archival cotton rag or archival stretched canvas as chosen by you by a small family firm in Brisbane. All of my cotton paper prints are inclusive of a 1cm white border and fit straight into standard frames or are easily custom-framed without losing any of the image, and the stretched canvas prints and originals can be put straight on the wall as they are ready to hang.
Our canvas prints come with a mirrored edge for a wrapped look or a plain edge if the background colour of the artwork is a block colour.
As with all new arrivals, we’d love to see you celebrate it properly. We suggest popping some champagne and taking a picture once it’s hanging on your wall.
We’d love to see your celebrations. You can tag us on Instagram @thenewdevine or send your snaps to us by replying to your order email.
Our favourite store-bought frames can be found on framing guide, and more framing information can be found on our FAQ page. Or, as with any question, please feel free to get in touch so we can help you perfect a room with your new art.
Shipping - We post on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Australian Standard Shipping is Free or you can choose express for $10. International flat rate shipping is $25. We post most orders on the following Tuesday or Friday, however there are some exceptions:
A1 and A0 artworks are printed to order as are all stretched canvas artworks. Please allow an extra 5-10 business days for printing in addition to standard Australia Post delivery estimates. We often have things ready MUCH sooner but sometimes, our printer is overwhelmed with our orders so please be patient if your new art takes a little longer to arrive. We promise it will be worth it.
Original Artworks: We very carefully varnish originals and pack them incredibly well once they are sold. Seamus is in charge of all of that and he’s meticulous - he used to work on gas rigs so when it comes to safety and attention to detail? He doesn’t compromise. It can sometimes take him a whole day to pack an original depending on the size with his unique system so you can imagine if we sell a couple of originals all at once he gets very busy! An extra couple of days for careful packing is absolutely worth it for a safe delivery of your art, though. Expect a week or so between ordering your original and it being posted. I promise it will be worth it.
Copyright and reproductions
Purchase of any The New Devine original artwork or art product (including reproductions) does not entitle the purchaser to make further copies—the copyright remains with the artist.
Framing
Please note all prints are sold unframed.
Images above are examples only and have been included to give you a squiz at how beautiful the work looks when framed.
We produce our prints to fit standard store-bought frames but we do recommend professional framing to improve the longevity and quality of your piece.
