An impossible love.

My French grandmother used to sing a song to me as a child. “The sun has a date with the moon but she isn’t here. She doesn’t come…” I‘ve felt the longing of this as truth so many times as an adult. The nocturnal and the crepuscular meeting only briefly as each is pulled in the opposite direction by the moon and the sun. I’ve known this love. This impossible love, lived in the brief twilight moments. This love where we meet in our in-between-sleep-and-waking moments. This love where one of us reaches out but the other doesn’t see and moves away. This love of wanting to speak each other’s language but the intensity being lost in the translation. This love of good intentions but needs not being met. This different hemisphere love where there aren’t even the same stars in the sky to hang wishes upon. Not even our thoughts of each other can meet in the same sky. This saudade.

This love that slips through our fingers. Where we try to meet but something comes between us despite our longing and reaching and trying. An almost love.

It’s the story of miscarriages. Of lovers but not quite. Of ‘not the right time.’ Of dementia. Of people gone too soon.

For all the loves that should have been or should have continued. Those loves where we watch over each other from afar. Still a real love. Perhaps the strongest love of all - the love we hold on to when we can’t hold each other as we hoped.

A love we often feel but feel we can’t mention at Christmas.

Someone to watch over me.

This Australian art print is for admirers of Australian birds - this kookaburra and owl are cuddled up and content (perfect for truly any room in the house) but mainly, it is for anyone who feels the longing of a loved one not here right now.

Artwork information

Fine art reproductions (prints) are printed on the very best archival cotton rag or archival stretched canvas as chosen by you by a small family firm in Brisbane. All of my cotton paper prints are inclusive of a 1cm white border and fit straight into standard frames or are easily custom-framed without losing any of the image, and the stretched canvas prints and originals can be put straight on the wall as they are ready to hang.

Our canvas prints come with a mirrored edge for a wrapped look or a plain edge if the background colour of the artwork is a block colour.

As with all new arrivals, we’d love to see you celebrate it properly. We suggest popping some champagne and taking a picture once it’s hanging on your wall.

We’d love to see your celebrations. You can tag us on Instagram @thenewdevine or send your snaps to us by replying to your order email.

Our favourite store-bought frames can be found on framing guide, and more framing information can be found on our FAQ page. Or, as with any question, please feel free to get in touch so we can help you perfect a room with your new art.

Shipping - We post on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Australian Standard Shipping is Free or you can choose express for $10. International flat rate shipping is $25. We post most orders on the following Tuesday or Friday, however there are some exceptions:

A1 and A0 artworks are printed to order as are all stretched canvas artworks. Please allow an extra 5-10 business days for printing in addition to standard Australia Post delivery estimates. We often have things ready MUCH sooner but sometimes, our printer is overwhelmed with our orders so please be patient if your new art takes a little longer to arrive. We promise it will be worth it.

Original Artworks: We very carefully varnish originals and pack them incredibly well once they are sold. Seamus is in charge of all of that and he’s meticulous - he used to work on gas rigs so when it comes to safety and attention to detail? He doesn’t compromise. It can sometimes take him a whole day to pack an original depending on the size with his unique system so you can imagine if we sell a couple of originals all at once he gets very busy! An extra couple of days for careful packing is absolutely worth it for a safe delivery of your art, though. Expect a week or so between ordering your original and it being posted. I promise it will be worth it.

Copyright and reproductions

Purchase of any The New Devine original artwork or art product (including reproductions) does not entitle the purchaser to make further copies—the copyright remains with the artist.

Framing

Please note all prints are sold unframed.

Images above are examples only and have been included to give you a squiz at how beautiful the work looks when framed.

We produce our prints to fit standard store-bought frames but we do recommend professional framing to improve the longevity and quality of your piece.
