The feel of the salty sea and sand in this abstract beach painting.
In the mornings at 5 am, the tide is out and the children run gleefully down the beach - across sand that spans what seems like miles - almost as though we could wade over to Moreton Island and never be in over our knees. Not quite, of course, but that’s how it feels from our hopeful holm. We search the beach for treasures as the sun rises over the water.
I alternate between chasing them as their giggles and shrieks scare the seagulls into circling the skies above us and standing ankle-deep in the salt water and staring at the horizon and remembering my own island childhood and now the island of Ireland - somewhere over the sea, and the arms of our loved ones awaiting us all. I wonder if this ancient ocean that delivers new delights to my children each day also carries memories and love from time gone by. I wonder if my children love the beach so much because they can feel the love and happy memories of millions of others soaking through the sand.
By 5:45 it is well and truly bright and the children pad home a little more slowly for breakfast with hands full of twigs, leaves and shells and feet, hair and sometimes nappies full of sand.
Sometimes when the tide turns in the twilight I walk out again on my own. In the distance I can hear my children playing and laughing at home as I watch the stars settle in the sky and see them mirrored in the ocean. The way the last of the sunset plays with the tide, as you look at the reflection of the stars in the water you can start to forget which way is up. Universes within universes…and I wonder if at that time when everything feels directionless if really it’s the moment when hearts find each other - across the water, through time, through lifetimes, across any distance. I think of my French grandparents (who have been gone some years now) in New Caledonia and in that crepuscular time it’s easy to imagine that they are still there…or that maybe they are stand on a different shoreline waiting to meet again one day.
This abstract beach painting is all about that low tide, the crystalline waters and the certainty I feel that our love travels those waters.

Artwork information
Fine art reproductions (prints) are printed on the very best archival cotton rag or archival stretched canvas as chosen by you by a small family firm in Brisbane. All of my cotton paper prints are inclusive of a 1cm white border and fit straight into standard frames or are easily custom-framed without losing any of the image, and the stretched canvas prints and originals can be put straight on the wall as they are ready to hang.
Our canvas prints come with a mirrored edge for a wrapped look or a plain edge if the background colour of the artwork is a block colour.
As with all new arrivals, we’d love to see you celebrate it properly. We suggest popping some champagne and taking a picture once it’s hanging on your wall.
We’d love to see your celebrations. You can tag us on Instagram @thenewdevine or send your snaps to us by replying to your order email.
Our favourite store-bought frames can be found on framing guide, and more framing information can be found on our FAQ page. Or, as with any question, please feel free to get in touch so we can help you perfect a room with your new art.
Shipping - We post on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Australian Standard Shipping is Free or you can choose express for $10. International flat rate shipping is $25. We post most orders on the following Tuesday or Friday, however there are some exceptions:
A1 and A0 artworks are printed to order as are all stretched canvas artworks. Please allow an extra 5-10 business days for printing in addition to standard Australia Post delivery estimates. We often have things ready MUCH sooner but sometimes, our printer is overwhelmed with our orders so please be patient if your new art takes a little longer to arrive. We promise it will be worth it.
Original Artworks: We very carefully varnish originals and pack them incredibly well once they are sold. Seamus is in charge of all of that and he’s meticulous - he used to work on gas rigs so when it comes to safety and attention to detail? He doesn’t compromise. It can sometimes take him a whole day to pack an original depending on the size with his unique system so you can imagine if we sell a couple of originals all at once he gets very busy! An extra couple of days for careful packing is absolutely worth it for a safe delivery of your art, though. Expect a week or so between ordering your original and it being posted. I promise it will be worth it.
Copyright and reproductions
Purchase of any The New Devine original artwork or art product (including reproductions) does not entitle the purchaser to make further copies—the copyright remains with the artist.
Framing
Please note all prints are sold unframed.
Images above are examples only and have been included to give you a squiz at how beautiful the work looks when framed.
We produce our prints to fit standard store-bought frames but we do recommend professional framing to improve the longevity and quality of your piece.
