Soothing, subtle and exceptionally sophisticated, Where the Mountains Kiss the Sky is a piece that is particularly close to my heart.

There’s an old Irish tradition where a woman who has been proposed to is invited to ‘walk the ground’ of her beau’s property. While walking the ground, the young lady surveys how well the land has been tended, the animals cared for, the rock walls mended and repaired—ostensibly to demonstrate how well her future husband will provide for and love the family they are to build together.

When Seamus and I were to be married, his family insisted I walk the ground. Humble by most farming standards, it’s situated on hilly land and dotted with stoic and sturdy sheep. I braced against wind gusts that threatened to bowl me over, dodged nettles potent enough to sting through the thickest of jeans to climb the hilly ground in a cold that took my breath away.

But the sheer greenness of the land, the feeling when I reached my hands to scrape the edges of the close-set sky with my bare fingers, the ethereal embrace of the clouds—it made me feel like the richest and luckiest person alive.
