It has been more than a year since we visited Cold Country. In my imagination our Irish farm and the Australian Bush meet and meld and marry and I’m left feeling elated and bereft all at once that we are never fully home. I wonder, on days when my children are unsettled, if it isn’t really the exhaustion of the day but in fact, the longing for a part of themselves they haven’t revisited for a long time...it’s the cultural confusion I felt as a child between here and France - always feeling a little more Australian when in France and always considerably more French when in Australia and always, always feeling like I had to leave home to get home. My husband describes the Irish farm ground as ‘owning him’ rather than the other way around. Ground that has been titled to his family for more than 400 years. That ground is such a strong pull for him that he belongs to it...and so I wonder if our part-Irish children are in fact owned by that ground too and their tantrums are really cries for home.

For me, the notions of home and motherhood entwine and interlace warmly and I’m left with this hushed landscape - sweeping clouds casting shadows on hills glowing in the afternoon light. It may be an Irish landscape, but it is a Brisbane autumn sun that illuminates it.
