Painted using only paint scraps from the other works in this collection, Celia is spontaneous, wild and incredibly complex. The mood of these piece seems to change each time I look at her. Broody one minute, uncontainable joy the next. This is the perfect piece to gaze at and discover over and over again as you mull over your coffee (or wine) - an opportunity for pause, contentment and wonder.

My French grandparents lived a great part of their lives in New Caledonia - a French tropical island paradise. They were Artists. Award winning potters, eco-warriors…but mainly? The kindest humans around. That turquoise I use in my paintings? Always, always for my Mamy Adele. It was her favourite colour - you can even see it in the top she is wearing here. Adele was a teacher by trade before becoming an artist (sound familiar?) and I fondly remember her teaching me to paint with stencils cut from cereal packets as a small girl. We’d paint flower pots, over stains in clothes, kitchen cabinet doors, designs on wooden chair backs…anything old was made new again with bold, colourful designs. Nothing was wasted. Their life was full of colour and new life- their pottery with complex glazes and forms, their home with their brightly painted cabinets and furniture, their lovingly tended garden - forever blooming with flowers and fruit and ladybirds and chickens…but mainly kindness. Kindness filled their lives with colour. My grandparents were everybody’s grandparents. There was never a day in their home when they weren’t welcoming in friends of friends, passers by, even TV crews to share their knowledge of organic gardening or pottery or healthy living. Everyone was warmly welcomed in a way only tropical islanders know how and sent away with handwritten recipes and a bag of fresh produce, eggs, seeds and plant cuttings. If I’m careful in our business never to waste anything - it is because of them and our mantra of ‘always be a little kinder than necessary?’ Well…

I hope when you hang this piece in your home that it will remind you to meet others with kindness, generosity and tropical warmth. The world needs more of that.
